She is the daughter of Beverley Sue Simon (nee Simon), who was a beauty professional and travel agent and Edwin Leon Nail, an employee of the airline. at the age of five, she relocated to St. Louis and graduated from Hazelwood Senior High School. Capshaw earned a degree in education at the University of Missouri, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She taught Special Education at Southern Boone High School in Ashland, Missouri, and Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri.
